T Cell Types and Functions

When T cells with CD4 markers are activated, they give rise to two types of effector cells: helper T cells and regulatory T cells. Meanwhile, T cells with CD8 markers differentiate into effector cytotoxic T cells. The differentiation of CD4 T cells into helper T cell subsets, such as Th1, Th2, and Th17 cells, is dependent on the antigen type, antigen-presenting cell, and regulatory cytokines.
Th1 cells stimulate dendritic cells to express necessary co-stimulatory molecules on their surfaces for...

Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Dermatology
  • Orthopedics

Background:

  • Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting joints and skin.
  • Mutilans arthritis is a rare and destructive subtype of PsA.

Observation:

  • The study presents two cases of mutilans arthritis.
  • Patients exhibited severe deformities in hands and feet.
  • Radiographic evidence corroborated the clinical presentation of severe disease.

Findings:

  • Mutilans arthritis leads to significant bone resorption and joint destruction.
  • The condition results in a characteristic "opera-glass hand" or "main en lorgnette" deformity.
  • Radiographs clearly demonstrate the extent of damage, including acro-osteolysis.

Implications:

  • Early recognition and diagnosis of mutilans arthritis are crucial for management.
  • Aggressive treatment strategies may be necessary to prevent further joint damage.
  • Understanding the radiographic features aids in differentiating this subtype and guiding therapy.
