Summary

Anterior urethral valves with urethral diverticulum are a rare cause of urinary obstruction in children. Early diagnosis is crucial to prevent severe kidney damage and end-stage renal disease.

Area of Science:

Background:

  • Anterior urethral valves (AUVs) with urethral diverticulum are rare congenital anomalies.
  • These anomalies can cause infravesical obstructive uropathy in male infants.

Observation:

  • This condition presents a diagnostic challenge in male infants with urinary obstruction.
  • Significant morbidity and potential for end-stage renal disease are associated with delayed diagnosis.

Findings:

  • AUVs with associated urethral diverticulum represent a critical cause of lower urinary tract obstruction in children.
  • Prompt recognition is essential for effective management.

Implications:

  • Inclusion of this rare condition in the differential diagnosis is vital for pediatric urologists.
