Introduction to Scalers01:21

Introduction to Scalers

Many familiar physical quantities can be specified completely by giving a single number and the appropriate unit. For example, "a class period lasts 50 min," or "the gas tank in my car holds 65 L," or "the distance between the two posts is 100 m." A physical quantity that can be specified completely in this manner is called a scalar quantity. The word "scalar" is a synonym for "number." Time, mass, distance, length, volume, temperature, and energy are some examples of scalar quantities.

SBAR II: Application of SBAR

SBAR is an effective communication tool used by healthcare professionals to communicate patient information accurately. SBAR stands for Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation. For a better understanding, an example is given below.
SBAR Report from a Nurse to a Health Care Provider
S: "Hello, Dr. Smith. This is Jane, RN, from the Med Surg unit. I am calling to tell you about Ms. White in Room 210, who is experiencing increased pain and redness at her incision site. Her recent...

Area of Science:

  • Speech-language pathology
  • Clinical practice

Background:

  • Evidence-based practice (EBP) is essential for clinical decision-making.
  • The field of speech-language pathology is transitioning towards EBP.
  • This shift requires structural support for implementation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify and describe key structures supporting EBP transformation in speech-language pathology.
  • To highlight the importance of these structures for scaling EBP.

Main Methods:

  • Review of available structures within speech-language pathology in the United States.
  • Description of systematic reviews, meta-analyses, treatment studies, and clearinghouses.

Main Results:

  • Systematic reviews and meta-analyses provide synthesized evidence.
  • Treatment studies offer data on intervention effectiveness.
  • Clearinghouses consolidate and disseminate research findings.

Conclusions:

  • These structures are vital for the successful integration and scaling of evidence-based practice.
  • Without these supports, EBP implementation in speech-language pathology will be limited.
  • Fostering these structures is key to advancing the profession.
