Background:

Whiteboards are increasingly used in healthcare settings to enhance communication.
Their integration into daily ward routines requires careful consideration of structures and processes.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the integration of whiteboards into ward routines within a Queensland health service district.
To evaluate the structures, processes, and perceived outcomes of whiteboard implementation.

Main Methods:

A case study design was employed in three inpatient wards and one day clinic.
Data collection involved 45 hours of observation, 11 in-depth interviews with staff, and photographic documentation.
The study was conducted over a six-month period in 2008.

Main Results:

Whiteboard integration varied significantly across settings, with highest success in the day clinic.
Medical wards showed partial integration, while the surgical ward experienced limited use and conflict.
Positive outcomes included improved patient flow, timely referrals, and better discharge planning in successful settings.

Conclusions:

Whiteboards hold potential for enhancing patient flow and communication.
Successful implementation necessitates a planned approach, addressing staff buy-in, discharge planning protocols, and patient privacy concerns.
