Summary

Sacral osteochondrosis, a condition causing hindlimb pain in German Shepherds, was identified in two dogs. Surgical removal of bone fragments resolved pain in one dog, while conservative management led to recurring discomfort.

Background:

  • Lumbosacral stenosis is a recognized cause of hindlimb pain in dogs.
  • Osteochondrosis is a developmental orthopedic condition affecting cartilage and bone growth.

Observation:

  • Two castrated adult male German Shepherd Dogs presented with intermittent hindlimb pain.
  • Clinical examination suggested lumbosacral stenosis, confirmed by imaging revealing sacral osteochondrosis.

Findings:

  • Surgical excision of osteochondral fragments resulted in complete pain resolution in one dog.
  • Conservative management in the second dog led to persistent, albeit mild, pain episodes over 18 months.
  • This case series represents the first report of sacral osteochondrosis in German Shepherds in Australia.

Implications:

  • Sacral osteochondrosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis for hindlimb pain in German Shepherds.
  • Surgical intervention may offer a definitive treatment for symptomatic sacral osteochondrosis.
  • Further research is warranted to understand the prevalence and long-term outcomes of this condition in canine populations.
