Summary

Total prostatectomy in dogs can lead to urinary incontinence, especially in cases with pre-existing incontinence or cancer. Preserving the prostatic urethra during surgery may help reduce this risk.

  • Prostatic diseases are common in male dogs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the incidence of urinary incontinence after total prostatectomy in dogs.
  • To identify risk factors associated with postoperative incontinence.

Main Methods:

  • Eleven dogs with prostatic disease underwent total prostatectomy.
  • Postoperative urinary continence was assessed.
  • Preoperative factors including incontinence and prostatic neoplasia were recorded.

Main Results:

  • Three of nine dogs experienced persistent urinary incontinence post-surgery.
  • Two of these three dogs had preoperative urinary incontinence.
  • A higher risk of incontinence was observed in dogs with prostatic neoplasia or preoperative incontinence.

Conclusions:

  • Total prostatectomy can result in persistent urinary incontinence in dogs.
  • Preoperative urinary incontinence and prostatic neoplasia are risk factors.
  • Techniques preserving the prostatic urethra may mitigate this complication.
