Systematics of high-genus fullerenes
1Department of Chemistry and Center for Theoretical Sciences, National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan, ROC.
We introduce a new method to classify high-genus fullerenes (HGFs) by constructing them from toroidal carbon nanotube segments. This approach allows for the systematic generation and stability analysis of novel fullerene structures.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Computational Chemistry
- Nanotechnology
Background:
- Fullerenes are allotropes of carbon with unique spherical, ellipsoidal, or tubular structures.
- High-genus fullerenes (HGFs) represent a complex class of carbon nanomaterials with potential applications.
- Understanding the structure-property relationships of HGFs is crucial for their targeted synthesis and utilization.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a systematic classification method for high-genus fullerenes (HGFs).
- To propose a novel construction scheme for generating HGF polyhedra.
- To establish criteria for assessing the stability of these newly proposed HGFs.
Main Methods:
- Decomposition of HGFs into necklike structures derived from toroidal carbon nanotubes.
- Replacement of faces of uniform polyhedra with these necklike structures.
- Analysis of geometric parameters to determine HGF stability.
Main Results:
- A systematic classification scheme for HGFs based on their construction from toroidal segments.
- Generation of HGF polyhedra, including those based on tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron, icosahedron, and truncated icosahedron.
- Identification of nonhexagonal faces, specifically heptagons, within the constructed HGFs.
- Development of criteria for stability assessment using four key geometric parameters.
Conclusions:
- The proposed construction scheme provides a unified approach to generating diverse HGFs.
- The inclusion of heptagons expands the structural diversity of fullerenes.
- The geometric criteria offer a pathway for predicting the stability of novel HGFs.

π Molecular Orbitals of 1,3-Butadiene
The simplest conjugated diene is 1,3-butadiene: a four-carbon system where each carbon is sp2-hybridized and has an unhybridized p orbital that contains an unpaired electron. According to molecular orbital theory, atomic orbitals combine to form molecular orbitals such that the number...
