Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively evaluate changes in bone density during pregnancy using QUS.
  • To assess bone density in healthy Italian women throughout gestation.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 59 pregnant women was studied.
  • Quantitative ultrasonometry (QUS) measurements were taken at the phalanges during the first, second, and third trimesters.
  • Bone time transmission (BTT) and amplitude-dependent speed of sound (AD-SoS) were assessed, along with z- and t-scores.

Main Results:

  • A progressive decrease in bone time transmission (BTT) was observed from the first to the third trimester.
  • Amplitude-dependent speed of sound (AD-SoS) remained stable initially but decreased by the third trimester.
  • Z- and t-scores showed a more pronounced decrease during the second and third trimesters, indicating bone demineralization.

Conclusions:

  • QUS variables demonstrated a significant reduction by the third trimester of pregnancy.
  • The findings suggest increased bone remodeling and demineralization in pregnant women.
  • Bone metabolism during pregnancy may differ between pluriparous and nulliparous women.
