Background:

  • Secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure poses significant health risks, including cardiovascular disease and respiratory illnesses.
  • Despite known risks, SHS exposure among college students remains understudied.
  • This study investigates SHS exposure patterns within a large college student population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify the prevalence and contexts of SHS exposure among undergraduate students.
  • To identify demographic and behavioral factors associated with SHS exposure.
  • To inform policy interventions aimed at reducing SHS exposure on college campuses.

Main Methods:

  • A web-based survey was administered to a random sample of 4,223 undergraduate students across 10 North Carolina universities.
  • Data collected included self-reported SHS exposure in various locations within the past seven days.
  • Statistical analyses identified factors associated with reported SHS exposure.

Main Results:

  • 83% of students reported SHS exposure in the week prior to the survey.
  • Restaurants/bars (65%), homes (55%), and cars (38%) were the most common exposure locations.
  • Smoking status, binge drinking, Greek affiliation, gender, race, parental education, and campus smoking rates were associated with increased SHS exposure.

Conclusions:

  • High rates of SHS exposure necessitate targeted interventions for college students.
  • Policy makers and university administrators should implement measures to decrease smoking and SHS exposure on campuses.
  • Further research is needed to understand and mitigate the long-term health impacts of SHS on young adults.
