Summary

Surgical staplers are generally safe for thoracic and abdominal surgery. Incident reports aid in assessing risks and improving surgical stapler design and safety.

Background:

Study objective: evaluate risks associated with surgical stapler use.
Focus on thoracic and abdominal surgical applications.

Observation:

Analysis of 165 incident/corrective action reports (2002-2007) from 3 manufacturers.
Retrospective review of product defaults, manufacturer investigations, and patient outcomes.

Findings:

Majority of malfunctions (52.7%) resulted in no patient injury and no product error.
Severe patient consequences reported in 35.2% of incidents.

Implications:

Surgical staplers demonstrate a high degree of safety in clinical practice.
Incident reporting is crucial for ongoing risk assessment and product enhancement.
