Brain Imaging

Brain imaging technologies provide critical insights into both the structure and function of the human brain, enabling medical professionals and researchers to diagnose, study, and treat neurological disorders or psychiatric disorders more effectively.
These technologies include computerized axial tomography (CAT or CT scans), positron-emission tomography (PET scans),  magnetic resonance imaging (MRI),  functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Cognitive Science
  • Philosophy of Mind

Background:

  • The brain's complex architecture underlies perception, cognition, and consciousness.
  • Existing frameworks often lack detailed mechanistic explanations for higher-order brain functions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the methodological and technical foundations of the Operational Architectonics framework.
  • To elucidate how this framework maps brain mechanisms of perception, cognition, and consciousness.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of local neuronal assemblies and their joint activity.
  • Identification of unified and metastable operational modules within the brain's hierarchy.
  • Detailed examination of operational behavior at the neuronal level.

Main Results:

  • Operational Architectonics offers a detailed approach to mapping brain function.
  • The framework reveals the hierarchical organization of brain operations.
  • It provides insights into the neural basis of phenomenal consciousness.

Conclusions:

  • Operational Architectonics is a robust framework for understanding brain and mind.
  • It enables detailed analysis of neuronal dynamics contributing to cognitive processes.
  • The theory offers a pathway to understanding the neural correlates of consciousness.
