Summary

A rare congenital epulis in a neonate caused feeding obstruction. Simple excision under local anesthesia successfully removed the tumor, offering a permanent solution.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Dentistry
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Neonatal Care

Background:

  • Congenital epulis is a rare benign oral tumor that can cause significant complications in neonates.
  • Maxillary epulis can obstruct the airway and interfere with oral feeding, necessitating prompt intervention.

Observation:

  • A neonate presented with a large congenital epulis originating from the anterior maxilla.
  • The tumor caused significant obstruction of oral feeding.
  • The epulis exhibited characteristics of easy accessibility, a narrow pedicle to the alveolus, and benign clinical behavior.

Findings:

  • Surgical excision of the congenital epulis was performed under local anesthesia.
  • The procedure resulted in the permanent eradication of the tumor.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The narrow pedicle facilitated a straightforward and complete removal.
  • Implications:

    • Simple excision is a viable and effective treatment for large congenital epulis in neonates.
    • Early diagnosis and surgical intervention can prevent complications such as feeding difficulties and respiratory distress.
    • This case highlights the importance of recognizing rare neonatal oral pathologies and managing them effectively.
