Background:

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition in aging men.
  • The etiopathogenesis of BPH is not fully understood.
  • Oxidative stress has been implicated in various chronic diseases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between the potency of oxidative stress and BPH.
  • To contribute to a realistic explanation of BPH etiopathogenesis.

Main Methods:

  • Seventy-four newly diagnosed BPH patients and 62 healthy controls were enrolled.
  • Plasma total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and total peroxide levels (TOS) were measured.
  • Oxidative stress index (OSI) was calculated as the ratio of TAC to TOS.

Main Results:

  • Plasma TAC, TOS, and OSI levels did not significantly differ between BPH patients and control subjects (p>0.05).
  • No significant relationship was found between oxidative stress markers and BPH.
  • The study did not establish a link between oxidative stress potency and BPH.

Conclusions:

  • The study indicates no direct relationship between the potency of oxidative stress and BPH.
  • Further well-designed studies are required to elucidate the potential role of oxidative stress parameters in BPH.
