    • Photonics and Optical Engineering
    • Nanotechnology
    • Integrated Optics

    Background:

    • Polarization splitters are essential components in optical systems.
    • Existing devices often lack compactness and efficiency.
    • Silicon wire waveguides offer potential for miniaturization.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To design and demonstrate an ultrasmall polarization splitter.
    • To achieve high polarization extinction ratio and low loss.
    • To enable polarization diversity in silicon photonics.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized a directional coupler structure with silicon wire waveguides.
    • Fabricated a single-coupler and a double-coupler device.
    • Characterized polarization extinction ratio and excess loss.

    Main Results:

    • Achieved an ultrasmall device size of 7 x 16 micrometers squared.
    • Obtained a polarization extinction ratio of ~15 dB for a single coupler and >20 dB for a double coupler.
    • Demonstrated excess loss below 0.5 dB.
    • Preserved high-speed waveform shape across all polarization angles.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed polarization splitter is highly compact and efficient.
    • It paves the way for ultrasmall optical circuits with polarization diversity.
    • Silicon wire waveguides are a promising platform for advanced photonic integrated circuits.
