Raman Spectroscopy Instrumentation: Overview

A conventional Raman spectrophotometer includes a laser source, a sample holding system, a wavelength selector, and a detector.
The monochromatic laser source, typically using visible or near-infrared radiation, generates a highly focused beam of light. This light interacts with the molecules of the sample, scattering some of the light. Liquid and gaseous samples are usually tested in ordinary glass capillaries, while solids can be analyzed as powders packed in capillaries or as potassium...

Area of Science:

  • Photonics
  • Spectroscopy
  • Chemical Sensing

Background:

  • Cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) is a highly sensitive absorption technique.
  • Fiber-optic sensors offer advantages in remote and distributed sensing.
  • Integrating CRDS with fiber optics presents opportunities for enhanced sensing capabilities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To demonstrate cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) within a fiber ring cavity.
  • To develop a fiber-optic sensor with a large evanescent wave interaction area.
  • To validate the sensor's effectiveness for chemical detection.

Main Methods:

  • Fabrication of a fiber ring cavity using a long-period grating.
  • Coupling light from the fiber core to the cladding via the grating.
  • Utilizing the evanescent wave for environmental interaction and absorption.
  • Recoupling unabsorbed light back into the fiber core.

Main Results:

  • Successfully demonstrated CRDS in the fiber ring cavity.
  • Achieved >99% light coupling from core to cladding.
  • The design provides a large evanescent wave absorption area.
  • Maintained very low loss in the fiber ring.
  • Demonstrated the cavity's effectiveness as a sensitive chemical sensor.

Conclusions:

  • The developed fiber ring cavity enables effective CRDS.
  • This sensor architecture offers a large evanescent wave interaction area with low optical loss.
  • The system shows significant potential for sensitive chemical sensing applications.
