Area of Science:

  • Pulmonology
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Medical Case Reports

Background:

  • Broncholithiasis, characterized by calcified bronchial stones, can lead to severe respiratory complications.
  • Massive hemoptysis is an uncommon but life-threatening manifestation of broncholithiasis.

Observation:

  • A rare case of massive hemoptysis originating from broncholithiasis is presented.
  • The clinical presentation and diagnostic challenges are discussed.

Findings:

  • Surgical resection is identified as the definitive treatment for broncholithiasis-induced massive hemoptysis.
  • Bronchial artery embolization demonstrates limited efficacy due to insufficient bronchial artery collaterals.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering broncholithiasis in patients with massive hemoptysis.
