Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Health
  • Public Health
  • Sociology

Background:

  • Sterilization, including tubectomy (female sterilization) and vasectomy (male sterilization), is a key family planning method.
  • Understanding the psychosocial factors influencing the choice and outcomes of sterilization is crucial for effective public health interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the psychosomatic effects and client profiles of individuals undergoing tubectomy and vasectomy.
  • To assess the recovery of sexual activity post-sterilization in both male and female participants.

Main Methods:

  • A follow-up study involving 300 tubectomy and 300 vasectomy cases in Mymensingh district.
  • Data collection through interviews using a pretested questionnaire to record psychosomatic effects.
  • Analysis of client demographics, motivations, and post-operative recovery, including sexual activity.

Main Results:

  • Clients were often illiterate, economically disadvantaged, and had 2-3 children, with family size being the primary motivation for sterilization.
  • Professional motivators were more effective for vasectomy cases.
  • No significant change in libido was observed in either group.
  • 99% of vasectomy patients resumed sexual activity by 30 days post-operation, compared to 52% of tubectomy patients by six weeks.

Conclusions:

  • Family size is a significant driver for sterilization choices.
  • Vasectomy patients experience a quicker return to sexual activity compared to tubectomy patients.
  • Further research into the psychosocial aspects of sterilization is warranted to gain deeper insights.
