Background:

  • Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a growing concern in children.
  • Understanding the clinical and laboratory features of pediatric NAFLD is crucial for early diagnosis and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinical and laboratory characteristics of pediatric NAFLD.
  • To assess the prevalence of NAFLD in children referred to a pediatric referral center in Northwest Iran.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study was conducted on 1500 children aged six months to 15 years.
  • 34 children with sonographic evidence of fatty liver underwent clinical and laboratory evaluation.
  • Data collected included age, liver enzymes (AST, ALT), cholesterol levels, and body mass index.

Main Results:

  • The prevalence of pediatric NAFLD was 2.3% (34 out of 1500 children).
  • Elevated AST (38.2%) and ALT (47.1%) were common. Hypercholesterolemia (94.1%) was prevalent, with a mean cholesterol of 461 mg/dl.
  • Higher cholesterol, aminotransferase levels, and BMI were significantly correlated with severe fatty liver.

Conclusions:

  • The study highlights significant biochemical abnormalities in pediatric NAFLD patients.
  • Findings emphasize the need for developing effective screening protocols for pediatric NAFLD.
  • Further research is needed to understand the pathophysiology of NAFLD in children.
