Background:

The case management (CM) workforce plays a crucial role in healthcare delivery.
Understanding the demographic and professional characteristics of CM professionals is essential for strategic workforce planning.
Existing data on the CM workforce's specific attributes, such as age, experience, and professional background, requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate and compare the demographic and professional characteristics of the US case management (CM) workforce.
To analyze CM workforce attributes by age, years of experience, and original profession.
To provide insights into the composition of the certified case manager (CCM) population.

Main Methods:

Exploratory, descriptive secondary analysis of a large dataset.
Utilized data from 24,085 certified case managers (CCMs).
Employed descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and correlation coefficients for analysis.

Main Results:

The CM workforce is predominantly Registered Nurses (RNs) at 93.3%.
Certified case managers (CCMs) are older (mean age 55.0 years) and enter CM later in their careers.
RN-CCMs had lower educational levels compared to CCMs from other professions; job titles, work settings, and client needs varied.
CCM distribution correlated with managed-care enrollment numbers.

Conclusions:

The demographic profile of CCMs is essential for effective clinical practice and workforce deployment.
Precisely understanding CCM characteristics is critical for aligning the workforce with healthcare needs.
Workforce management is crucial due to RN shortages and an aging workforce in the US.
