Summary

Fetal eye development, including lens, interocular distance, and globe growth, follows a quadratic model, slowing toward the end of gestation. These parameters can be measured using fetal MRI.

Area of Science:

  • Medical imaging
  • Fetal development
  • Ophthalmology

Background:

  • Limited research exists on ocular abnormalities and growth parameters via fetal MRI.
  • Fetal eye development is crucial for understanding congenital conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the relationship between fetal eye development parameters and gestational age.
  • To utilize fetal MRI for assessing ocular growth.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 127 fetuses with normal CNS.
  • Measured transverse globe diameter, interocular distance, and lens diameter using fetal MRI.
  • Applied Loess curves and statistical models to analyze growth patterns.

  • Fetal eye growth, including lens, interocular distance, and globe diameter, follows a quadratic model.
  • Lens and interocular distance growth plateau around 36 weeks gestation.
  • Globe growth plateaus around 42 weeks gestation.
  • Conclusions:

    • Fetal MRI effectively demonstrates lens, orbit, and interocular distance growth.
    • All measured parameters indicate a quadratic growth model, with slowed growth near term.
    • Findings provide normative data for fetal eye development assessment.
