Summary

Gallbladder ascariasis, a rare complication of Ascaris lumbricoides infection, can cause acute cholecystitis. This case highlights successful laparoscopic treatment for this unusual presentation of a common parasitic disease.

The Availability Heuristic

A heuristic is a general problem-solving framework (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). You can think of these as mental shortcuts that are used to solve problems. Different types of heuristics are used in different types of situations, and the impulse to use a heuristic occurs when one of five conditions is met (Pratkanis, 1989):

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary Medicine
  • Infectious Diseases and Parasitology

Background:

  • Ascariasis, caused by Ascaris lumbricoides, is a prevalent helminthic infection globally.
  • Typically, adult Ascaris reside in the small intestine, but rare migration can occur.
  • Migration into the biliary system, including the gallbladder, is an infrequent complication due to anatomical challenges.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report a rare case of gallbladder ascariasis.
  • To describe the presentation of acute cholecystitis secondary to Ascaris in the gallbladder.
  • To document the successful laparoscopic management of this condition.

Main Methods:

  • Case report detailing a patient with acute cholecystitis.
  • Diagnostic evaluation including imaging to identify gallbladder pathology.
  • Surgical intervention using laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Main Results:

  • Ascaris lumbricoides was identified within the gallbladder.
  • The patient presented with symptoms consistent with acute cholecystitis.
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy was performed successfully, removing the worm and gallbladder.

Conclusions:

  • Gallbladder ascariasis is a rare but significant cause of acute cholecystitis.
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a feasible and effective treatment for gallbladder ascariasis.
  • Increased awareness is needed for diagnosing parasitic infections presenting atypically in the biliary tract.
