Summary

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) during pregnancy appears safe in the first and second trimesters. While one first-trimester case involved termination, the other resulted in a normal birth, with second-trimester cases showing positive delivery outcomes.

The Availability Heuristic

A heuristic is a general problem-solving framework (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). You can think of these as mental shortcuts that are used to solve problems. Different types of heuristics are used in different types of situations, and the impulse to use a heuristic occurs when one of five conditions is met (Pratkanis, 1989):

Area of Science:

  • Surgical safety
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Gastrointestinal surgery

Background:

  • Gallbladder disease is common, necessitating surgical intervention.
  • Pregnancy presents unique challenges for surgical procedures.
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is a standard treatment for gallstones.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and outcomes of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) performed during pregnancy.
  • To assess the impact of LC on pregnancy progression and delivery.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of hospital databases for patients who underwent LC during pregnancy.
  • Analysis of pregnancy outcomes, including delivery type and gestational age.

High-throughput Fluorometric Measurement of Potential Soil Extracellular Enzyme Activities

Published on: November 15, 2013

  • Six cases of LC during pregnancy were identified.
  • First trimester: One elective termination, one normal term delivery.
  • Second trimester: Two normal term deliveries, two cesarean sections.
  • No cases were performed in the third trimester.

Conclusions:

  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is suggested to be a safe procedure during the first and second trimesters of pregnancy.
  • Further research with larger cohorts is warranted to confirm safety profiles.
