Restorative Care01:19

Restorative Care

Restorative care is provided once a patient has been discharged from a healthcare facility and requires additional services. The additional services include home care, rehabilitation programs, and extended care. Restorative care centers help the patient regain their previous level of functioning or acquire a new level of functioning due to the incapacitating effects of a disease or a disability. It aims to assist patients in enhancing their quality of life by encouraging independence,...
Tertiary Healthcare System01:21

Tertiary Healthcare System

Specialized care provided over an extended period is called tertiary care. Usually, a primary or secondary care physician will refer a patient to tertiary care. A patient's maximum physical and mental function is restored in tertiary care, which is caused due to the impact of a chronic illness or condition. Tertiary care aims to achieve the highest level of functioning possible while managing chronic illness. For example, a patient who falls and fractures their hip will need secondary care to...

Documentation in Long-Term and Home Healthcare Setting

Documentation in long-term care facilities and home healthcare settings is crucial for ensuring continuous, coordinated, and comprehensive care for patients. Each setting has its specific documentation processes and tools:

Hospitals-I01:28

Hospitals-I

Hospitals offer medical and surgical care to the sick and injured, along with accommodation while they recover. At the same time, they also provide outpatient, emergency, psychiatric, and rehabilitation services to meet various community needs. In addition to providing medical care, hospitals also act as hubs for medical research and training. Hospitals use clinical procedures and evidence-based practice standards to deliver patient care. To deliver safe and efficient care, a nurse must stay up...
Specialized Care Centers and Settings-II01:30

Specialized Care Centers and Settings-II

Rural Health Centers
Rural health centers are specialized care facilities in remote locations with very few medical personnel. The primary care providers who run the centers are mostly Registered Nurse Practitioners. Here, emergency treatment is provided to critically ill or injured patients before they are transferred to the closest hospital. Fortunately, due to advancement in technology, many rural healthcare facilities and professionals have easy access to diagnostic and treatment...
Continuing Care01:25

Continuing Care

Continuing care describes the variety of health, personal, and social services provided over a prolonged period. The need for continuing care is increasing because people are living longer. Many people do not have families or others to care for them. Continuing care is mainly for patients who are disabled, functionally dependent, or suffering from a terminal disease. It is available within institutional settings or in homes. Examples include nursing centers or facilities, assisted living,...

Summary

Long-term acute care hospitals (LTACHs) manage complex patients, facing high rates of hospital-acquired infections and multidrug-resistant organisms. This review examines LTACH infection control challenges and their role in regional outbreaks.

Area of Science:

  • Healthcare Management
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Hospital Epidemiology

Background:

  • Long-term acute care hospitals (LTACHs) provide care for complex patients with extended acute needs.
  • Initially designed to reduce Medicare costs, LTACHs now admit patients with broad diagnoses and multiple comorbidities.
  • These patients are at increased risk for colonization with multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the scientific literature on LTACHs.
  • To highlight infection control challenges within LTACH settings.
  • To examine the role of LTACHs in regional outbreaks of MDROs.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of scientific publications on LTACHs.
  • Analysis of infection control issues specific to LTACH environments.

  • Investigation of LTACH involvement in MDRO outbreaks.
  • Main Results:

    • LTACH patients experience high rates of hospital-acquired infections, including central vascular catheter-associated bloodstream infections and ventilator-associated pneumonia.
    • LTACHs have been implicated in regional outbreaks of multidrug-resistant organisms.
    • Limited scientific literature exists on LTACHs, particularly concerning infection control.

    Conclusions:

    • LTACHs present significant infection control challenges due to patient complexity and comorbidities.
    • LTACHs play a role in the spread of multidrug-resistant organisms and regional outbreaks.
    • Further research is needed to address infection control in LTACH settings.
