Summary

Prolonged or strong interhemispheric stimulation can trigger spreading depression, a brain activity pattern. Stimulation parameters critically influence whether this leads to increased excitability or inhibitory patterns.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Neurophysiology

Background:

  • Spreading depression is a wave of neuronal and glial depolarization that propagates across the cerebral cortex.
  • Understanding the factors that elicit and modulate spreading depression is crucial for neurological research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the incidence and characteristics of spreading depression elicited by interhemispheric stimulation.
  • To determine the influence of stimulation parameters on the resulting neural activity patterns.

Main Methods:

  • Interhemispheric stimulation was applied to elicit spreading depression.
  • Variations in stimulus duration, pulse strength, and train length were systematically tested.
  • Neural responses, including field potentials and afterdischarges, were monitored.

Main Results:

  • The incidence of spreading depression increased with prolonged stimulus duration, increased pulse strength, and longer stimulus trains.
  • Spreading depression occurred in one-third of initial trials and two-thirds with repeated stimulation.
  • Alternating interhemispheric responses and self-sustained afterdischarges often preceded spreading depression.
  • All phases of the interhemispheric response patterns exhibited inhibitory components.

Conclusions:

  • Stimulation parameters critically dictate whether a permanent increase in excitability (kindling) or inhibitory patterns emerge.
  • Interhemispheric stimulation can reliably elicit spreading depression, with its occurrence modulated by stimulus characteristics.
