Urinary symptoms like urgency are common in multiple sclerosis (MS). However, this study found no direct link between these symptoms, complications, or disease type and urodynamic findings, emphasizing symptom assessment for quality of life.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Urology
Background:
- Multiple sclerosis (MS) frequently causes urinary dysfunction, impacting patient quality of life.
- Understanding the relationship between MS, urinary issues, and bladder function is crucial for effective management.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the prevalence of urinary symptoms and complications in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS).
- To investigate correlations between urinary symptoms/complications and urodynamic findings.
- To examine associations with different MS disease characteristics (PPMS, RRMS, SPMS).
Main Methods:
- Fifty-two MS patients were categorized by disease type: primary progressive (PPMS), relapsing-remitting (RRMS), and secondary progressive (SPMS).
- Urological symptoms and complications were recorded.
- Urodynamic investigations and Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) assessments were performed.
Main Results:
- Urgency (65%) was the most common symptom; urinary infection (15%) was the most frequent complication.
- Detrusor hyperreflexia (27%) was the primary bladder dysfunction, followed by detrusor sphincter dyssynergia (25%).
- No significant correlations were found between urinary symptoms/complications and urodynamic findings or disease characteristics (p>0.05).
Conclusions:
- Urinary symptoms and complications are prevalent in MS but show no direct correlation with urodynamic findings or disease types in this cohort.
- Urological symptom assessment and urodynamic evaluation are vital for managing MS patients' quality of life.

Disorders of the Urinary System
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common urinary system disorders. They are caused by bacteria that enter the urethra and can spread to the bladder resulting in cystitis. Pyelonephritis is the result of a UTI that has ascended to the level of the...
Nursing Assessment of the Genitourinary System I: Health History
The Micturition Reflex
The process begins with bladder filling, where the bladder wall stretches as urine accumulates. This stretching activates the urine storage reflex, mediated by the sacral spinal segments and the pontine storage center. Efferent sympathetic impulses stimulate the detrusor muscle to relax and the internal urethral sphincter to contract, facilitating urine...
