Transformations of Functions III01:20

Transformations of Functions III

80
Transformations modify the graphical representation of a function without changing its fundamental form. One common transformation is reflection, which flips the graph across a designated axis. When the vertical coordinates of all points are multiplied by the negative one, the entire graph is mirrored over the horizontal axis. This transformation reverses the vertical orientation of peaks and troughs, akin to signal inversion in electrical systems, where a waveform is flipped, but the timing of...

Introspection01:29

Introspection

131
Introspection, long upheld as a reliable route to self-knowledge, involves examining one's thoughts, emotions, and mental processes. It underpins many psychological practices, from mindfulness meditation to psychotherapy and self-help strategies. However, empirical evidence challenges the accuracy of introspection as a means of understanding oneself.Limitations of Introspective InsightSeminal work by Nisbett and Wilson demonstrated that individuals are frequently unaware of the true causes...

Social Exchange Theory01:26

Social Exchange Theory

223
As formulated by John Thibaut and Harold Kelley, Social Exchange Theory explains human relationships as economic-like exchanges that maximize rewards and minimize costs. This theory suggests that individuals engage in relationships to gain benefits and reduce burdens, similar to economic transactions. It has been widely applied to various types of relationships, including romantic, professional, and social interactions.Rewards and Costs in RelationshipsRelationship rewards include emotional...

Lazarus's Cognitive Appraisal Theory

1.3K
Cognitive psychologist Richard Lazarus proposed the cognitive-mediational theory of emotions, which emphasizes how individuals' assessments of stressors significantly affect their experience of stress. According to Lazarus, the stress response is determined by a two-step appraisal process: primary appraisal and secondary appraisal. These cognitive appraisals help individuals evaluate the potential impact of a stressor and determine the adequacy of their coping resources.

Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

5.6K
Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

The Anchoring-and-Adjustment Heuristic01:25

The Anchoring-and-Adjustment Heuristic

7.6K
In order to make good decisions, we use our knowledge and our reasoning. Often, this knowledge and reasoning is sound and solid. However, sometimes, we are swayed by biases or by others manipulating a situation. For example, let’s say you and three friends wanted to rent a house and had a combined target budget of $1,600. The realtor shows you only very run-down houses for $1,600 and then shows you a very nice house for $2,000. Might you ask each person to pay more in rent to get the...

Summary

The flip test for sciatica is often misinterpreted. Pain on knee extension during the test, not a trunk "flip," is the most reliable indicator of nerve root tension in patients with limited straight leg raise.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Diagnostic Medicine
  • Orthopedics

Background:

  • The flip test is a common clinical maneuver for assessing nerve root tension in sciatica patients.
  • It's used to corroborate findings from the supine straight leg raise (SLR) test.
  • Despite its common use, the flip test lacks validation in scientific literature.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the construct validity of the flip test in diagnosing nerve root tension.
  • To determine the reliability and interpretation of the flip test's results.

Main Methods:

  • A diagnostic study involving 67 sciatica patients with confirmed nerve root compression via MRI.
  • The flip test was performed, and patient responses were recorded.
  • Responses were compared to supine SLR results and statistically analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Only one-third of patients exhibited the characteristic "flip" response.
  • A significant portion experienced pain upon knee extension (39%) or resisted extension due to pain (28%).
  • Painful responses were strongly associated with supine SLR angles below 45 degrees.

Conclusions:

  • The traditional interpretation of the flip test may be inaccurate.
  • The test is valuable for nerve root tension assessment, particularly in patients with supine SLR < 45 degrees.
  • Pain on knee extension is a more reliable indicator than the "flip" itself; "sitting SLR test" is proposed as a clearer name.
