Web 2.0 applications often lack accessibility. The Web Accessibility Initiative-Accessible Rich Internet Applications (ARIA) markup offers a solution, demonstrated through an accessible AJAX chat application and screen reader.
Area of Science:
- Computer Science
- Human-Computer Interaction
- Web Development
Background:
- Web 2.0 technologies, particularly AJAX, have enabled sophisticated web applications like Google Maps and Flickr.
- A significant challenge with these dynamic web applications is the lack of accessibility support.
- This deficiency hinders usability for individuals with disabilities.
Purpose of the Study:
- To explore the current state of ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) documentation for Web 2.0 developers.
- To introduce a novel approach using channels for enhanced accessibility.
- To present a practical implementation of ARIA for accessible AJAX applications.
Main Methods:
- Review of existing ARIA documentation relevant to Web 2.0 development.
- Development of a new channel-based innovation for ARIA implementation.
- Case study: Implementation of ReefChat, an ARIA-based accessible AJAX chat application.
- Integration testing with Fire Vox, an ARIA-compatible screen reader.
Main Results:
- Identified gaps and best practices in current ARIA documentation for AJAX applications.
- Demonstrated the feasibility of a channel-based approach for ARIA.
- Successfully created an accessible AJAX chat (ReefChat) using ARIA.
- Validated the compatibility and effectiveness of ReefChat with the Fire Vox screen reader.
Conclusions:
- ARIA provides a viable framework for enhancing the accessibility of Web 2.0 applications.
- The presented ReefChat example showcases a practical, ARIA-compliant solution for AJAX-based communication tools.
- Further development and adoption of ARIA standards are crucial for inclusive web design.
