  • IgAN diagnosis has historically been absent in reported Caribbean cases.
  • This study addresses the diagnostic gap of IgAN in the Caribbean region.

Observation:

  • Five cases of IgA nephropathy were diagnosed in Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana.
  • No cases originated from individuals of African descent.
  • Some cases presented atypically, deviating from classic IgAN manifestations.

Findings:

  • IgA nephropathy occurs in Caribbean populations, challenging previous assumptions.
  • Diagnosis requires immunofluorescence staining of renal biopsy specimens.
  • Non-African origin and atypical presentations were noted in these cases.

Implications:

  • Caribbean nephrologists must consider IgAN in differential diagnoses for glomerular disease.
  • Timely diagnosis is vital for appropriate patient management and preventing end-stage renal failure.
  • While IgAN can recur in transplanted kidneys, it typically does not cause graft failure.
