Background:

Seclusion and restraint are critical interventions in mental healthcare.
Understanding healthcare professionals' educational needs is vital for improving practices.
Existing support structures may not adequately address the complexities of seclusion and restraint.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify the educational needs of nurses and physicians regarding seclusion and restraint.
To explore their perceptions of current seclusion and restraint practices and support systems.
To inform the development of targeted educational interventions.

Main Methods:

Focus group interviews were conducted with nurses (N=22) and physicians (N=5).
Data were analyzed using inductive content analysis to identify key themes.
Four focus groups were utilized to gather comprehensive insights.

Main Results:

Participants highlighted a need for on-ward, problem-based education.
Infrastructural and managerial support were identified as essential.
A discrepancy was noted between stated ethical principles and the reliance on manpower, alongside high seclusion and restraint rates.

Conclusions:

Future educational programs should integrate clinical guidelines with ethical and legal training.
Addressing staff support is a critical component for effective seclusion and restraint management.
Educational initiatives must align with practical needs and ethical considerations in clinical settings.
