Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Parasitology
  • Molecular Epidemiology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by tapeworms of the genus Echinococcus.
  • Understanding the genetic diversity of Echinococcus tapeworms is crucial for effective disease control.
  • Peru has a significant burden of cystic echinococcosis, necessitating detailed epidemiological studies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To genetically characterize tapeworm isolates from various hosts and regions in Peru.
  • To identify the circulating Echinococcus genotypes and their host associations.
  • To provide data for targeted prevention and control strategies against cystic echinococcosis in Peru.

Main Methods:

  • DNA sequencing of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) and nuclear elongation factor 1 alpha (ef1a) genes.

  • Analysis of 71 larval Echinococcus isolates from diverse intermediate hosts and geographic locations in Peru.
  • Genotyping of Echinococcus isolates to determine genetic variations.
  • Main Results:

    • The G7 genotype (Echinococcus canadensis pig strain) was identified for the first time in pigs from Lima, Peru.
    • Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto (G1, sheep strain) was the most prevalent genotype, found in humans, sheep, and cattle.
    • The G6 genotype (Echinococcus canadensis camel strain) was detected in goats and one human patient.

    Conclusions:

    • Genetic diversity of Echinococcus tapeworms in Peru includes previously unreported strains.
    • The identification of specific genotypes in different hosts and regions aids in understanding transmission dynamics.
    • These genetic insights are vital for developing and implementing effective cystic echinococcosis control programs in Peru.
