Summary

Maternal plasma visfatin levels are elevated in spontaneous preterm labor (PTL) with intra-amniotic infection (IAI). This suggests visfatin plays a role in metabolic adaptations during PTL with IAI.

Background:

  • Visfatin, an adipokine, is linked to insulin resistance and inflammation.
  • Previous studies indicated higher amniotic fluid visfatin in preterm labor (PTL) with intra-amniotic infection (IAI).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between spontaneous PTL with intact membranes and intra-amniotic infection/inflammation (IAI) and maternal plasma visfatin concentrations.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study comparing four groups: normal pregnancy, PTL without IAI (term delivery), PTL without IAI (preterm delivery), and PTL with IAI (preterm delivery).
  • Plasma visfatin concentrations were measured using ELISA.
  • Statistical analysis employed non-parametric methods.

Main Results:

  • Maternal plasma visfatin concentrations were significantly higher in PTL with IAI leading to preterm delivery compared to normal pregnancy.
  • Among PTL patients, those with IAI exhibited the highest median maternal visfatin levels.

Conclusions:
