Summary

A cat with recurrent hindlimb paresis was diagnosed with a spinal arachnoid cyst. Surgical intervention provided temporary relief, but progressive neurological decline led to euthanasia.

  • A Birman cat experienced paraparesis due to a thoracic vertebral fracture, initially managed conservatively.

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a spinal arachnoid cyst, treated surgically with dorsal laminectomy and durectomy.
  • Repeat imaging (myelography and CT-M) after a second recurrence showed cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pooling at the surgical site.
  • Progressive spinal cord atrophy was noted on repeat CT-M, despite minimal CSF pooling.

Findings:

  • Initial conservative management of vertebral fracture led to temporary recovery.
  • Surgical treatment of spinal arachnoid cyst resulted in functional recovery, but symptoms recurred.
