Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the feasibility of measuring resolution rates of bacterial skin infections in general practice.
  • To identify factors associated with nonhealing of bacterial skin lesions.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study involving 15 general practitioners who recruited 93 patients between March 2005 and October 2007.
  • Collection of clinical and sociodemographic data at baseline, with follow-up assessments at 2 and 6 weeks to evaluate lesion resolution.

Main Results:

  • 65% of recruited patients (60/93) completed the 2- and 6-week follow-ups.
  • Boils and impetigo were common diagnoses, with most patients receiving antibiotics.
  • 18% and 9% of participants had nonhealed lesions at 2 and 6 weeks, respectively. Indigenous patients showed higher rates of nonhealing and new lesions.

Conclusions:

  • Nonhealing of bacterial skin infections is a common occurrence in general practice.
  • Clinicians should be aware of the potential for prolonged healing, especially in indigenous populations.
  • Further investigation is warranted to understand and address the factors contributing to nonhealing bacterial skin infections.
