Summary

Isolated polyethylene exchange in well-fixed Harris-Galante II acetabular components is safe using the native locking mechanism. This direct exchange avoids cementing or complete revision, with low complication rates in this study.

  • Follow-up data was collected for a mean of 5.1 years.

    • One instance of polyethylene disengagement occurred due to a pre-existing fractured tine.
    • Four additional revisions were performed for unrelated reasons (loosening or instability).

    Conclusions:

    • Direct polyethylene exchange using the native locking mechanism of the Harris-Galante II acetabular component is a safe and viable option.
    • This procedure can be performed without cementing or complete revision, provided the locking tines are intact.
    • The native locking mechanism is reliable for isolated polyethylene exchange in this acetabular component.
