Summary

Combination therapy with thymosin alpha 1 (TA1) and interferon (IFN) restored natural killer (NK) cell activity in mice with B-16 melanoma. This immunotherapy approach also prolonged survival, suggesting potential for cancer treatment.

Background:

  • Natural killer (NK) cell activity is crucial for anti-tumor immunity.
  • Tumor growth can lead to suppression of NK cell activity.
  • Interferon (IFN) can enhance NK activity, but its effectiveness is diminished in later stages of tumor progression.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the combined effects of thymosin alpha 1 (TA1) and murine alpha/beta interferon (IFN) on NK activity and tumor growth.
  • To evaluate the therapeutic potential of TA1 and IFN combination therapy in a B-16 melanoma mouse model.

Main Methods:

  • Mice bearing B-16 melanoma were treated with TA1 and IFN, alone or in combination.
  • NK cell activity was measured at different time points post-tumor inoculation.
