Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Behavioral Science
  • Addiction Research

Background:

  • Electronic gambling machines (EGMs) represent a high-risk gambling activity.
  • Understanding motivations for EGM use is crucial for addressing problem gambling.
  • Previous research highlighted the need for specific EGM motivation measures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a new measure of motivations for gambling on electronic gambling machines (EGMs).
  • To identify distinct motivational factors driving EGM use.
  • To examine the relationship between these motivations and EGM gambling problems.

Main Methods:

  • A qualitative study informed the development of a new EGM motivation scale.
  • Exploratory factor analysis was used on data from a community sample (N=355).

  • Correlations were calculated between motivational factors and gambling frequency/problems.
  • Main Results:

    • Three primary motivations emerged: escape, accessibility, and social environment.
    • Gambling to escape and for accessibility showed strong positive correlations with EGM gambling frequency and problems.
    • The social environment motivation showed weaker correlations with excessive gambling indicators.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed EGM motivation measure is reliable and valid.
    • Escape and accessibility are significant drivers of problematic EGM gambling.
    • The findings suggest that the EGM environment enhances escape motivations, contributing to problem gambling.
