Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of standard strabismus surgical procedures for thyroid ophthalmopathy.
  • To assess patient satisfaction and visual outcomes following this surgical approach.

  • Retrospective review of 31 patients undergoing strabismus surgery for thyroid ophthalmopathy over 5 years.
  • Standard muscle recession and reattachment technique without postoperative adjustment was employed.
  • Surgical dosing followed a published nomogram, with modifications for reoperations.

  • Preoperative diplopia and motility restriction were present in all patients; 71% achieved full ocular motility post-surgery.
  • 81% of patients were satisfied after one surgery, increasing to 94% after reoperation.
  • Only 16% of patients had persistent diplopia postoperatively, with most achieving single binocular vision with prism.

Conclusions:

  • Standard strabismus surgery is a viable and effective treatment for restrictive thyroid ophthalmopathy.
