Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychology
  • Linguistics
  • Human-Computer Interaction

Background:

  • Gestural behavior is integral to human communication and cognition.
  • Existing methods for analyzing gestural behavior can be fragmented and lack standardization.
  • Understanding the link between gesture kinetics and function is crucial for neuropsychological and psychological research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce the NEUROGES coding system for analyzing gestural behavior.
  • To present ELAN as a complementary multimodal annotation tool.
  • To demonstrate the combined utility of NEUROGES and ELAN for empirical research on gestural behavior.

Main Methods:

  • The NEUROGES coding system comprises three modules, progressing from gesture kinetics to function.

  • ELAN, a free, multimodal annotation tool, supports multileveled transcription and data management.
  • The system allows for the storage and reuse of gesture categories and vocabularies via template files.
  • Main Results:

    • The NEUROGES system provides a structured framework for classifying gestural movements.
    • ELAN facilitates detailed, multi-layered annotation of video and audio data.
    • The integration of NEUROGES with ELAN offers a robust methodology for empirical research.

    Conclusions:

    • The NEUROGES coding system and ELAN annotation tool offer an effective, integrated solution for the empirical study of gestural behavior.
    • This combined approach supports the investigation of cognitive, emotional, and interactive functions associated with specific movement categories.
    • The methodology advances research in neuropsychology, psychology, and related fields by providing standardized tools for gestural analysis.
