Summary

In-office teeth whitening systems effectively change tooth shade. Diode laser bleaching showed superior shade change and reduced tooth and gingival sensitivity compared to other light sources.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effectiveness of in-office bleaching systems with different light sources.
  • To evaluate shade change and side effects like tooth and gingival sensitivity.
  • To determine the optimal light source for dental bleaching.

Main Methods:

  • Forty volunteers received bleaching with four different systems: no light, diode laser, plasma arc lamp, or LED lamp.
  • Tooth shade was measured using a Vita shade guide and a digital spectrophotometer at baseline and one week post-treatment.
  • Tooth and gingival sensitivity were recorded using a visual analog scale.

Main Results:

  • All bleaching techniques resulted in a noticeable shade change.
  • Spectrophotometer readings indicated significant differences in color change among groups, unlike shade guide assessments.
  • Diode laser bleaching (Group 2) demonstrated significantly higher overall shade change (DeltaE) and lower tooth/gingival sensitivity compared to other groups.

Conclusions:

  • In-office bleaching systems, with or without light activation, effectively whiten teeth.
  • Diode laser bleaching appears to be a preferred method due to its significant color change and reduced patient sensitivity.
