Abstract:
A new soluble ester of l-5-hydroxytryptophan (l-5-HTP (Ro 03-5940) was shown to have clear central effects in man following i.v. application after peripheral decarboxylase inhibition (Ro 04-4602). A reproducible time course of mood elevation in non-depressed subjects was observed up to four hours after l-5-HTP infusion in 34 35 experiments, together with stimulation of growth hormone and prolactin release. Noteworthy were both the high levels of growth hormone, and that the time of peak growth hormone release correlated with peak mood elevation.
