Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Rehabilitation Medicine
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • Psychological flexibility is crucial for adaptation in medical rehabilitation.
  • The Acceptance and Action Questionnaire (AAQ) measures psychological flexibility.
  • Its psychometric properties in medical populations require validation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish the psychometric properties of the AAQ in medical rehabilitation settings.
  • To assess the reliability and validity of the AAQ in diverse patient groups.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional and longitudinal study design.
  • 139 adults from three inpatient rehabilitation units.
  • Administered AAQ alongside measures of psychological, physical, and social well-being.

Main Results:

  • The AAQ demonstrated adequate internal consistency (alpha = .70) and a two-factor structure.
  • AAQ scores correlated significantly with depression, affect, hope, and spiritual well-being.
  • Avoidance predicted lower life satisfaction and higher handicap levels at follow-up.

Conclusions:

  • The AAQ is a reliable and valid measure for assessing psychological flexibility in medical rehabilitation.
  • Avoidance is a significant factor influencing rehabilitation outcomes and patient well-being.
