Background:

Understanding factors influencing job satisfaction and accountability is crucial for retaining registered nurses (RNs), especially in rural healthcare.
Previous research highlights the importance of accountability in nursing practice, but its relationship with job satisfaction in rural settings requires further exploration.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the relationship between job satisfaction and accountability among RNs with clinical responsibilities in a rural Midwest healthcare network.
To identify specific aspects of job satisfaction that correlate with accountability to inform administrative improvements.

Main Methods:

Secondary data analysis of a primary study involving 299 RNs from a rural healthcare network.
Utilized the Specht and Ramler Accountability Index-Individual Referent and the McCloskey-Mueller Satisfaction Scale (MMSS) to measure accountability and job satisfaction, respectively.
Descriptive correlational design to examine the relationship between the two variables.

Main Results:

RNs perceived their accountability levels as relatively high, while job satisfaction was moderate.
A significant, moderate positive correlation was found between accountability and job satisfaction.
Specific MMSS subscales, including control and responsibility, praise and recognition, professional opportunities, and scheduling, showed statistically significant but low correlations with accountability.

Conclusions:

Accountability and job satisfaction are linked in rural RNs, suggesting that fostering a sense of accountability may positively influence satisfaction.
Nurse administrators can target areas such as control, recognition, professional development, and scheduling to enhance both accountability and job satisfaction.
Findings provide actionable insights for improving the work environment and retention of nurses in rural healthcare settings.
