Summary

Acute pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas, can be triggered by medications. Physicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for drug-induced pancreatitis (DIP) due to its rising incidence.

Context:

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a significant pancreatic inflammation.
Gallstones and alcohol abuse are common causes, accounting for 75% of US cases.
Medication-induced pancreatitis (MIP) is an infrequent but increasing cause, representing 2% of cases.

Purpose:

To review and classify drugs implicated in causing acute pancreatitis.
To highlight the diagnostic challenges and criteria for drug-induced pancreatitis (DIP).

Summary:

Over 100 drugs have been anecdotally linked to AP.
Definitive diagnosis of DIP requires exclusion of other causes, drug withdrawal, and potential recurrence upon reintroduction.
