Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

The Web Screening Questionnaire (WSQ) effectively screens for common mental disorders online. While good at identifying those without disorders, it produces many false positives.

Area of Science:

  • Mental Health
  • Digital Psychiatry
  • Psychometric Validation

Background:

  • Internet-based self-help systems require efficient user triage for common mental disorders.
  • Brief online screening questionnaires offer a rapid solution for user assessment.
  • These tools can also pre-screen patients before general practitioner consultations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate and improve the Web Screening Questionnaire (WSQ) for detecting specific mental health conditions.
  • The WSQ aims to screen for depressive disorder, alcohol abuse/dependence, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social phobia, panic disorder, agoraphobia, specific phobia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Main Methods:

  • 502 adult participants (aged 18-80) completed the WSQ and nine other online questionnaires.
  • A subset of 157 participants underwent a diagnostic assessment via phone using the WHO Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI).

Main Results:

  • Significantly higher mean scores on validating questionnaires were observed for positive WSQ "diagnoses" (P < .001).
  • Optimized WSQ demonstrated sensitivity ranging from 0.72 to 1.00 and specificity from 0.44 to 0.77.
  • The Area Under the Curve (AUC) for WSQ items was comparable to longer assessment tools.

Conclusions:

  • The WSQ is validated for screening common mental health conditions.
  • The questionnaire effectively identifies individuals without mental health issues but has a notable rate of false positives.
