Conclusions:

  • Selective overexpression of HER2 and HER3 in distinct gastric cancer histologic types is strongly associated with a poor prognosis.
  • HER3, as a key member of the HER family, represents a potential candidate for molecular-targeted therapy in gastric cancer.
  • Targeting HER3 may be particularly beneficial for patients with the diffuse histologic type of gastric cancer.
