Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Patient Outcomes Research

Background:

  • Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is increasingly explored for outpatient settings.
  • Assessing patient selection and program feasibility is crucial for successful implementation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine enrollment rates in an outpatient THA study.
  • To evaluate the safety and patient satisfaction of same-day discharge after THA.
  • To identify potential benefits of outpatient THA programs.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study of 192 eligible patients under 65 years.
  • Analysis of enrollment, same-day discharge, and complication rates.
  • Patient-reported outcomes via diaries and satisfaction questionnaires.

The Transition to an Anterior-Based Muscle Sparing Approach Improves Early Postoperative Function but is Associated with a Learning Curve

Published on: September 7, 2022

  • 69 patients (36%) enrolled; 53 (77%) were discharged same-day.
  • No medical readmissions occurred.
  • 96% of surveyed patients were satisfied with outpatient THA; no objective physical benefits were identified.

Conclusions:

  • Outpatient total hip arthroplasty is feasible and safe for selected patients.
  • High patient satisfaction suggests acceptance of same-day discharge protocols.
  • Further research may explore objective benefits and optimize patient selection.
