Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) rarely affects the colon and rectum. Surgical resection of rectal lesions provided immediate symptom relief in a patient with advanced MCL.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Oncology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Malignant lymphoma rarely involves the colorectal region, presenting unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.
  • Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL), a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, can exhibit extranodal involvement, including the gastrointestinal tract.

Observation:

  • A patient with advanced MCL presented with rectal syndrome due to a rectal lesion, despite prior chemotherapy.
  • The patient underwent surgical resection of the rectum and right colectomy.

Findings:

  • Post-surgical intervention led to the immediate resolution of all intestinal symptoms.
  • This case highlights the potential benefit of surgical management in select cases of colorectal MCL.

Implications:

  • The findings underscore the importance of considering surgical intervention as part of a multimodal treatment strategy for colorectal lymphoma.
  • Aggressive surgical management may offer significant symptomatic relief and potentially impact outcomes in rare cases of advanced MCL with colorectal involvement.
