Summary

Psammoma bodies in calcifying tendinitis are calcified spherules, not containing collagen or elastin. This suggests cell injury initiates intracellular calcification, leading to calcifying tendinopathy.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Pathology
  • Biomaterials Science

Context:

  • Calcifying tendinitis is a painful condition characterized by calcium deposits in tendons.
  • Psammoma bodies, typically associated with tumors, were observed in calcifying tendinitis.
  • Understanding the ultrastructure of these bodies is crucial for elucidating the pathogenesis of tendinopathy.

Purpose:

  • To investigate the ultrastructural nature of psammoma bodies in calcifying tendinitis.
  • To compare the morphology of these bodies in undecalcified and decalcified tissues.
  • To elucidate the cellular and extracellular mechanisms of calcification in tendinopathy.

Summary:

  • Electron microscopy revealed calcified spherules with radially arranged hydroxyapatite crystals in undecalcified tissues.

Related Experiment Videos

  • In decalcified tissues, these structures appeared as microspheroids of filamentary, patchy, or granular precipitates, lacking collagen or elastin.
  • These findings suggest a process initiated by cellular injury, followed by intracellular calcification, necrosis, and subsequent extracellular calcification.
  • Impact:

    • The study provides novel insights into the ultrastructural composition and formation of psammoma bodies in calcifying tendinitis.
    • Findings suggest a common pathway for calcification across different pathological conditions, including tumors and arteriosclerosis.
    • This research may inform future therapeutic strategies targeting the cellular mechanisms of calcification in tendinopathy.
