We developed a compact dual-mode semiconductor laser for generating tunable terahertz (THz) waves. This novel optical beat source enables continuous tuning of continuous-wave (CW) THz emission.

Area of Science:

  • Optoelectronics
  • Terahertz (THz) Science and Technology
  • Semiconductor Lasers

Background:

  • Continuous-wave (CW) terahertz (THz) generation is crucial for various applications.
  • Compact and tunable THz sources are highly desirable.
  • Existing THz generation methods often face limitations in tunability and size.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To demonstrate a monolithic dual-mode semiconductor laser as a compact optical beat source.
  • To achieve tunable continuous-wave (CW) terahertz (THz) generation.
  • To enable independent tuning of laser modes for precise THz frequency control.

Main Methods:

  • Fabrication of a monolithic dual-mode semiconductor laser with two distributed feedback (DFB) sections and a phase section.
  • Independent tuning of each DFB laser mode using integrated micro-heaters and current adjustments.
