Summary

Hyoid bone displacement during swallowing does not significantly differ between stroke patients who aspirate and those who do not. Swallowing impairment after stroke may stem from delayed pharyngeal swallow triggering rather than reduced hyoid movement.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences were found in maximal vertical or anterior hyoid displacement between aspirating and non-aspirating stroke patients.
  • Maximal anterior hyoid displacement was marginally greater in non-aspirators compared to aspirators.
  • The extent of hyoid excursion did not correlate significantly with aspiration status.

Conclusions:

  • Reduced maximal hyoid excursion is unlikely to be the primary cause of aspiration in stroke patients.
  • Aspiration before or during swallowing in stroke survivors may be more associated with the timing of pharyngeal swallow initiation than the degree of hyoid movement.
